Use of a portable topographic mapping millimetre wave radar at an active lava flow

چکیده
[1] A ground-based millimetre wave radar, AVTIS (Allweather Volcano Topography Imaging Sensor), has been developed for topographic monitoring. The instrument is portable and capable of measurements over ranges up to 7 km through cloud and at night. In April and May 2005, AVTIS was deployed at Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica, in order to determine topographic changes associated with the advance of a lava flow. This is the first reported application of mm-wave radar technology to the measurement of lava flux rates. Three topographic data sets of the flow were acquired from observation distances of 3 km over an eight day period, during which the flow front was detected to have advanced 200 m. Topographic differences between the data sets indicated a flow thickness of 10 m, and a dense rock equivalent lava flux of 0.20 ± 0.08 ms . Citation: Macfarlane, D. G., G. Wadge, D. A. Robertson, M. Topographic and thermal mapping of volcanic terrain using AVTIS ground-based 94-GHz dual-mode radar/radiometric imager
The AVTIS remote sensing instrument is a custom built millimeter wave sensor that has been developed as a practical field tool for remote sensing of volcanic terrain at active lava domes. The portable instrument combines active and passive millimeter wave measurements to record topographic and thermal data in almost all weather conditions from ground-based survey points. We describe how the ins...
متن کاملLava dome growth and mass wasting measured by a time series of ground-based radar and seismicity observations
[1] Exogenous growth of Peléean lava domes involves the addition of lava from a central summit vent and mass wasting on the flanks as rockfalls and pyroclastic flows. These processes were investigated at the Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, between 30 March and 10 April 2006, using a ground-based imaging millimeter-wave radar, AVTIS, to measure the shape of the dome and talus surface and ro...
متن کاملLava Flow Topographic Measurements for Radar Data Interpretation
Surface topography is of great importance in radar back scattering, but the quantitative interpretation of data collected in the field is still a difficult problem. We present topographic profiles at 25-cm and 5-cm horizontal resolution for three sites along a lava flow on KUauea Volcano, and use these data to illustrate techniques for surface roughness analysis. Height and slope distributions ...
متن کاملRemote Sensing Observations for Volcano Monitoring and Hazard Mitigation
Volcanic eruptions are spectacular but dangerous phenomena to study on-site, and they present many challenges because of the diversity of activity and their remote locations. Indeed, the tragic loss of life at Galeras and Mt. Unzen volcanoes in the early 1990s illustrates the dangers associated with studying active volcanoes at close quarters. However, much progress has been made in volcano rem...
متن کاملAnalysis of Active Lava Flows on Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, Using SIR-C Radar Correlation Measurements
Precise eruption rates of active pahoehoe lava flows on Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, have been determined using spaceborne radar data acquired by the Space Shuttle Imaging Radar-C (SIR-C) . A coastal site downslope from the Pu'u O'o vent was imaged once per day, on each of the four days from October 7-10, 1994. Day-to-day decorrelation due to resurfacing was determined by interferometric combinatio...
